Responsibilities: Visual identity design
Client: Horrible Unicorn Game Studios
Tools: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, pen & paper
Horrible Unicorn Game Studios is an indie video-game developer from Southern Ontario who needed a sharp, unique and exciting visual identify to showcase their personality and creativity. Indie game development is a particularly challenging market, one that is flooded with global competition, so the identity had to make an impact and set them apart, while scaling across a wide variety of formats and mediums.
Process and Iteration
The most challenging part of this project was defining the right tone and attitude of the identity, as the studio’s games would vary in theme and subject matter. Ultimately, this was a fine balance between creativity and intensity, with a side of humour. This required extensive brainstorming and iteration with the core development staff at the studio, alongside a thorough analysis of the competitive landscape in order to help guide creative direction.
